Adaptiva’s OneSite redesign

Overview

Adaptiva's OneSite is a product that works with ConfigMgr, Microsoft Intune, or VMware Workspace One to distribute content with speed. The purpose of the redesign was to bring OneSite into the Adaptiva web portal from their desktop application. I also reduced the complexity of the UI and provided visualizations for content distribution status monitoring. The development of this project was executed in four phases:

Background

Company

Adaptiva is a Kirkland, WA based company that provides endpoint management products for businesses to easily distribute content to and monitor compliance of endpoints.

Problem

OneSite is a product provided by Adaptiva to distribute content from ConfigMgr, Microsoft Intune, and VMware Workspace One to endpoints quickly and without issues. The original desktop application had a very complex UI. This deterred many customers from trying to use the application on their own and they relied heavily on the solutions team for setup and assistance.

Project goal

The motivation for this redesign came from the desire to move this product from the old desktop application into a web application. The main goals for this redesign were to create easier setup and maintenance experiences and provide an approachable experience with an updated UI.

Role and responsibilities

As the only product designer at Adaptiva, I worked with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to see this project from concept to development. I conducted heuristic evaluations and SME interviews, created prototypes to review with stakeholders, and worked with engineering teams during development.

Process

Research

For preliminary research, I conducted a heuristic evaluation and conducted interviews with support and sales staff. I gained insight into the sales process and learned that the support staff is heavily involved in the setup of OneSite because of the unnecessary complexity of the product flow. Using my interviews I created personas for IT administrators who use our products. I would have ideally liked to have conducted interviews with customers or potential customers, but internal interviews allowed me the chance to build rapport with support and sales staff.

Prototype

After conducting preliminary research and developing personas, I created an interactive prototype using Adobe XD. OneSite integrates with other content distribution products like ConfigMgr, Microsoft Intune, and VMware Workspace One. One of the challenges of designing this product was to keep track of the differences in integrated products and content types.

Review

During the review stage, I got feedback from engineers on the feasibility of my designs, worked with support to fine-tune important data points, and obtained approval from upper management. In the future, I would like to conduct usability tests with our customers to improve designs and experience flows.

Engineering handoff

After a few rounds of internal reviews with different stakeholders, I created a final high-fidelity interactive prototype to hand off to the engineering team. I worked with the engineering team to ensure design consistency in the final product. Internally, the reaction to this product was very positive and I plan to collect customer feedback in the form of interviews and usability testing.

Solution

The following are designs and features from my solution that I would like to highlight:

Live WAN and distribution status

OneSite is largely made up of set and forget features, but if an IT administrator needed to monitor the distribution of specific content they could do so using this feature. The live WAN and distribution status dashboards allow users to monitor the flow of content and set overrides when necessary. Additionally, in case of emergency IT administrators can pause all WAN downloads using the red button available at the top right.

Content publication

Previously, to publish content users had to access a perspective and open many different windows. I designed a unified view for all content to allow users to publish content and view publication status easily. I also designed an experience for a dashboard to visualize the overall publication status for each type of ConfigMgr content.

Settings

Previously, to configure settings a user had to navigate to separate perspectives. I simplified the complex settings experiences into one view to easily access the set and forget features during product setup.
